BONES

Don't use a trowel,
you always said.
Better to dig
with your hands, to feel
the bones of the earth,
to know where it all comes from.

Now the years
have swallowed you whole
and I'm digging here alone
(still without a trowel),
looking for the bones,
knowing that somewhere
you're kneeling there beside me,
making sure I'm doing it right.
